MARTINA NAVRATILOVA, the defending champion who survived a third-set tie-break in the second round of the Virginia Slims of Los Angeles, was not as fortunate in the third round. The second-seeded Navratilova, who plans to retire from competitive singles after this year, was beaten by the 13th seed, Ann Grossman, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
