BRITAIN'S Jeremy Bates defeated Alexander Volkov, of Russia 7-5, 7-6 in the second round of the Czech Indoor tournament in Ostrava yesterday to reach his third quarter-final of the year on the IBM/ATP Tour. Volkov, who will be playing against Sweden in the Davis Cup final in December, had beaten the top-seed Alberto Berasategui in the opening round, failed to impress Bates with his stills in the second set tie-break, which the Britain No 1 won 7-3.
