The Filipino lightweight, Fernando Piccio is on a life support machine in a Brisbane Hospital after being knocked out in the seventh round of a lightweight contest against the Australian Selwyn Currie at the Toowoomba Showground, 77 miles west of Brisbane. He suffered a suspected brain haemorrhage and the hospital said he was "unconscious, on a life support machine and in a serious condition." Piccio is the first professional fighter to suffer a serious ring injury in Australia since the cruiserweight Pat Stone collapsed and died after a fight with Garry Wills in Brisbane in August 1990.
