Sir: After the dust has settled and Ossie Ardiles has been roundly and justifiably criticised for Spurs' poor league position, it is perhaps interesting to note that Spurs also finished 15th as recently as 1991-92.

By then Spurs had enjoyed the benefits of five years of input and guidance - man-management, tactical sophistication, transfer acumen, all-round football 'savvy' - from the current England coach.

Funny old game, isn't it?
