Sports Letters: Belgian blunder

Sir: I think there is an error in your preview of Arsenal's Cup-Winners' Cup tie in Belgium (2 October). Arsenal have never played Standard Liege in a competitive match but they lost 4-2 on aggregate to Royal FC Liege in 1963 in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. They drew 1-1 at Highbury and lost the second leg. Bob Wilson played in the home leg, Jim Furnell away, Terry Anderson scored the Highbury goal, Billy McCullough the away one.

To prevent any 'spies' going to the wrong venue, Standard play at the Sclessin stadium and RFC at Rocourt. There is also a club in Lier, KSK Lierse, in the Belgian First Division.

Yours faithfully,

ROBERT A VAUGHAN,

East Sheen,

London SW14
