Sports Letters: For the record

Sir: What does Derek Hodgson mean when he writes (16 January) that Graeme Souness has a 'brilliant previous record?' Everyone in Scotland has tumbled to him already] With Rangers, he inherited millions of pounds and a massive club with nearly 40 previous league championships. He also inherited Walter Smith, a shrewd tactician, as assistant manager. In those circumstances it was no great shakes to win the Scottish Premier League for a few years (three) in a row - Jock Stein won nine in a row] Yet Mr Hodgson, does not seem to have seen through the Souness myth. He cannot hack it as a manager and that is why he is wrecking the Liverpool tradition of success.

Yours in sport,
