Sports Letters: Garcia groan

Sir: It was interesting to note that while the millionaire golf professionals at Carnoustie moaned and groaned about the course and the conditions, few of them made mention of the many poor shots that were played.

I realise that golfers of this standard rarely have to play from the kind of positions they found themselves in at this year's Open, but often they were unwilling to take the sensible option instead of attempting almost impossible recovery shots.

As for young Senor Garcia, he blamed both the course and the weather for his poor performance, omitting to mention that all the other players coped with them better than he had.
