Sir: It seems that Glenn Moore ("FA must avoid a moral crusade against Gascoigne", 30 October) can more easily forgive Paul Gascoigne for beating his wife than for a match-losing error on the pitch.

Why should he not become an example of what can be lost for wife-beating? Does a wayward talent release him from moral obligations, or even decent behaviour off the pitch? He could set a good example to youngsters - why should he not illustrate to them how much can be lost for the want of self-control and law-abiding behaviour?
