Michael Doohan has dominated the World 500cc Championship this season, and victory in the French Grand Prix last Sunday has given him a big advantage over Kevin Schwantz, the champion who has a good record at Donington Park with three wins. Niall Mackenzie, third last year, leads the British entry. Practice starts at 9am today, with qualifying from 1.30pm. Tomorrow the British sidecar Grand Prix is at 12.45pm. On Sunday, untimed warm-up is from 9.30am, with the first of eight races at noon.

How to get there: Donington Park, Castle Donington, Derby, is next to East Midlands airport, three miles from junctions 23A/24 of the M1/M42/A42. British Rail: Derby and Loughborough on the London-Sheffield line (0332-32051), and Leicester and Nottingham. Bus connections to Castle Donington from all four. (0332- 292200 or 0602-240000). Admission: today pounds 8 adult; tomorrow pounds 10; Sunday: pounds 30. Grandstand transfer: free today and tomorrow; pounds 20 on Sunday. Accompanied children, 15 and under, are free.
