The Devizes to Westminster race is known as the toughest canoe race in the world. The 125-mile paddle on the Kennet and Avon Canal, joining the River Thames at Reading, demands fitness and application. The senior double crews time their start to take advantage of the ebb tide at Teddington, setting out today between 7am and 4pm. The record is 15hr 34min. The single and junior entrants complete the race in four legs, leaving between 8 and 10am and stopping overnight at Newbury, Marlow and Ham.

Where to watch: Senior double crews: Devizes, Pewsey, Crofton (all Wiltshire), Hungerford, Newbury, Aldermaston, Reading (all Berkshire), Henley (Oxfordshire, about 9.30 pm). Junior and Singles: Today: Devizes to Newbury, 34 miles (8am-2pm); Tomorrow: Newbury to Longridge, below Marlow Lock, 36 miles (8am to 2pm); Sunday: Marlow to Ham, below Teddington lock, 38 miles (8am to 3pm); Monday: Ham to Festival Hall Pier, Westminster, 17 miles (7.25-10am).
