It was not to be Damon Hill's victory at Silverstone last year, despite setting a new lap record, after his engine failed on the 42nd lap while leading the British Grand Prix. This year he has the challenge of Michael Schumacher in the Benetton-Ford to face. Schumacher, who finished second to Alain Prost in 1993, has already set the fastest lap at the revamped circuit when testing at Silverstone recently.

How to get there: Silverstone Circuit, nr Towcester, Northamptonshire. (Tel: 0327-857273). By road: Signposted from junction 15 on M1, then A43. Car parks are free. By train: London Euston to Milton Keynes and Birmingham New Street to Northampton with coach connections. By bus: Special service from Northampton's railway station and Greyfriars Bus Station (0604-36681). By coach: from Birmingham New Street, NEC Birmingham, Coventry, Northampton and Milton Keynes (Sunday only). Admission: Friday: pounds 17 adults, pounds 4 children 15 and under. Grandstand free. Infants two and under free all days. Saturday: pounds 23, pounds 4. Grandstand pounds 18 adults, children free. Sunday: pounds 57, pounds 7. Grandstands: A few seats left ( pounds 115). Gates open at 5am, the Grand Prix is at 2pm.
