The boycott of the men's competition at the National Championships at Cheadle by the British Squash Professionals' Association over low prize-money, lack of sponsorship and selection procedure for the national squad has meant that only one player, Philip Whitlock, from England's top 10 will be competing. The withdrawal, however, will provide the rising talent with an opportunity to shine, but, if the seedings follow pattern, Whitlock, top seed and ranked fourth nationally, could meet Paul Lord, No 3 seed, in an all-Cheshire final. In the women's competition, Cassandra Jackman, from Norfolk, is favourite for the title. The semi- finals are scheduled for Sunday with the finals on Monday evening. Tickets for all days are still available.

How to get there: Village Leisure Hotel, Cheadle, Cheshire is off A34 south of Manchester city centre. Admission: Today: sessions 1 and 6.30pm, free. Tomorrow: 1 and 6.30pm, pounds 5 per session or pounds 8 day ticket. Sunday: 11am age-group matches, free; 3pm semi- finals, pounds 12. Monday: 11am age-group finals, free; 6.30pm women's final, 7.15pm men's final pounds 12. (Tel: 061-428 0404).
