Stephen Meads, the British national champion, saved a match point and earned himself a quarter-final with the world champion, Jansher Khan, after a remarkable contest against Mir Zaman Gul in the Rolex US Open at Providence, Rhode Island, yesterday. Jansher, who begins the defence of his world title in little more than two weeks, won 15-7, 15-5, 15-8 against the former English national champion, Phil Whitlock. Another Englishman, Mark Chaloner, caused an upset by defeating the number four seed, Zarak Jahan Khan, 11-15, 15-12, 15-6, 17-15. Zarak Jahan sealed the world title triumph for Pakistan two years ago.
