Super League plans given green light
A British Super League will start next September after officials of the proposed league met the British Ice Hockey Association (BIHA) and the British League management committee in London yesterday.
Although the details have yet to be worked out, it was recognised that the Super League would be crucial to the growth of professional ice hockey in Britain. "Make no mistake about it, we want this to go ahead." Frederick Meredith, the BIHA president, said.
All of the existing Premier and First Division clubs will be invited to express interest in joining the new league within the next week.
Potential Super League clubs are expected to have to provide proof of financial backing, a commitment to junior hockey, marketing ability, player strength, suitable venues and a firm commitment to the sport. The Super League line-up and fixtures will be revealed on 28 March.
