Surprise for Smith

Lawrie Smith, the overall leader of the Ultra 30 series, yesterday had the legality of his yacht, Frontera, questioned in the final grand prix here, writes Stuart Alexander from Belfast Lough.

Russell Peters, who won the title two years ago, asked the scrutineers to rule on Smith's boat after being left in the position where he would have to beat Smith by three place points in all three races today to take the championship. The scrutineers' decision will be announced this morning.

Eddie Warden Owen yesterday made the best of a breeze softening from 12 knots down to six. He scored two wins and a second as Smith recorded a fourth, first and third. Owen and Smith have 24 points, with Glyn Charles third on 20.
