Lanfranco Dettori, the champion Flat jockey, was given a three-day suspension yesterday for improper use of the whip.

The track's stewards held an inquiry into Dettori's riding of Birequest, the hot favourite beaten a head by Secret Aly in the 10-furlong Daily Star Challenge Series race.

They found that the jockey was in breach of Jockey Club instruction H9 by using his whip with unreasonable frequency in the final furlong.

As it was Dettori's second offence of the season, the stewards gave him a three-day ban, running from 18-20 February.
