Sandra Volker set a world best time for the women's 50 metres backstroke at the European sprint swimming championships at Gateshead yesterday. The German, who had won the 50m freestyle 24 hours earlier, clocked 28.26sec to beat the mark of 28.33 she set in Sheffield on 16 February this year. Susan Rolph was the highest placed of Britain's three finalists, finishing fourth in the 100m medley.
