The national champion, Carl Prean, recovered from tendinitis in the knee to play a leading role in a 3-0 victory over Poland which made England's men safe in the top category of the World Championships at Tianjin, China, yesterday. The win ensured a place in the leading group at the next World Championships in Manchester in 1997 and gives them a chance of qualifying for the World Team Cup in Atlanta in August - to do so they have to win all three matches in the play-offs for 9th-16th places.
