Chen Xinhua, England's No 1 player, beat the world champion Jean-Philippe Gatien in the European Nations Cup in Bayreuth, Germany, but England's medal hopes nevertheless disappeared with a surprise 3-1 defeat by France. Chen, who won the World Cup while playing for his native China, confounded the left-handed attack of Gatien with his back spun and floated defence and won 21-18, 16-21, 21-6, but then England, third last time, foundered with Carl Prean losing both his singles matches and the doubles with Alan Cooke.
