Andrew Eden, the newcomer who won twice as England retained the Commonwealth team title on Friday, put up a sterling performance in the second round of the men's singles before succumbing to the world No 14 in four games in Hyderabad, India, yesterday, writes James Leigh. The 20-year-old Lancastrian led the top-
seeded title-holder, Johnnie Huang of Canada, by a game and 11-7 before losing 16-21, 21-17, 21-15, 21-15. Earlier Eden had overcome Australia's Paul Langley 21-15, 22-20, 21-10. Alan Cooke, who also won twice during the team final, made a fine start to his attempt to win back the men's singles title he took in Cardiff in 1989, beating two Indians, Tiku Daz and Ganesh Kundu, to reach the last 16. Lisa Lomas, England's leading woman, has returned home after feeling unwell during the women's run to the team silver medal.
