Deeds done with the ball have brought Test match recognition for McCague, less so heroics with the bat. But Kent's success in salvaging a draw from their Championship fixture with Surrey owed as much to his occupation of the crease as to the four wickets that later undermined Surrey's run chase. McCague's career-best 63, spanning 150 minutes, denied Surrey a much easier target.
