An umpire walked off court after the former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash allegedly swore at him during a practice match in Melbourne, the Tennis Australia media manager, Rosanne Michie, said. Several line judges joined the protest, but no action can be taken against Cash because the match was not played under the auspices of Tennis Australia.

Tom Gullikson has been re-appointed captain of the US Davis Cup team and will be begin his fourth year in charge when the States meet Brazil in their opening 1997 Davis Cup tie on 7-9 February.
