Sarah Danzig, who won 18 Grand Slam titles (mostly in doubles) and was considered one of the most elegant players on the circuit in the 1930s and 1940s, has died in New York of lung cancer. She was 83.

Boris Becker, the Australian Open champion, was knocked out of the Italian indoor tournament in Milan last night in just 65 minutes by the world No 28, Bohdan Ulihrach. Fourth-ranked Becker, who has recently recovered from a bout of influenza, committed a string of unforced errors as he went down 6-4, 6-2 to the young Czech in the first-round match. ''All my family is in bed with the 'flu and I spent Sunday and Monday ill in bed,'' the German complained.
