Britain's Chris Wilkinson beat Michael Kohlmann, of Germany, 6- 4, 6-2 in the first round of the ATP Challenger in Lippstadt yesterday. Wilkinson, seeded fifth, plays Radomir Vasek of the Czech Republic next.

Jeff Tarango, the controversial American who was fined a record pounds 10,000 at Wimbledon last year, beat Jeremy Bates 6-4, 7-6 at the Shanghai Men's Open yesterday. Tarango, the No 1 seed, meets another Briton, Danny Sapsford, in the second round.
