WINNERS and runners-up in the men's singles events at the four Grand Slam championships are to receive additional world-ranking points, starting from next month's Australian Open, writes John Roberts.
The ATP Tour, acknowledging the need to 'fine tune' the computer with a bigger differential between the Grand Slams and its own tournaments, has agreed to award 120 extra points to the winners of the majors and 50 to the runners-up.
Under the new system, Pete Sampras would have received 650 points as the Wimbledon champion instead of 530.
Additional points will also be allocated to the winners and runners-up of ATP events.
