Magnus Gustafsson, of Sweden, continued his climb back up the world rankings when he beat Vince Spadea of the USA 6-4 6-0 in the quarter- finals of the Red Clay Championships in Coral Springs, Florida yesterday. Gustafsson, who is ranked ranked 36th on the ATP Tour, will now face seventh- seed Jason Stoltenberg, a 6-4 6-4 victor over his fellow Australian Sandon Stolle. In the other quarter- finals, Javier Frana of Argentina advanced with a
6-4 6-4 victory over Michael Tebbutt, of Australia, while the former NCAA champion Chris Woodruff defeated Australia's Richard Fromberg 6-4 6-4. Gustafsson's victory was another positive step on the road back from an injury-plagued 1995, which saw his ranking drop to 611 after shoulder surgery in October 1994.
