Amélie Mauresmo is set to resume her position as Andy Murray’s principal coach in time for the Australian Open in January.

There had been speculation that Mauresmo might not want to return after giving birth to her first child two months ago, but Murray said here last night that he had had a “very positive” conversation with the French woman about their future partnership.

“We spoke about what it is that I feel like I needed from her,” Murray said following his comfortable 6-2, 6-4 victory over Steve Johnson in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. “We had a good conversation. She’s basically gone away to think about it and said that she’ll get back to me when I’m finished here and we can chat more about it.

“But I would say it was very positive. I think she wants to continue doing it. It obviously has to work for both of us, but I’m pretty positive about it.”

Mauresmo stopped working with Murray after Wimbledon this summer, shortly before she gave birth to a baby boy, Aaron. Since then the Scot has been coached by Jonas Bjorkman, who joined his entourage in the spring, when it was known that he would need extra support in Mauresmo’s impending absence.

While Murray said that Bjorkman remained part of his plans, the world No 2 is expecting to work only with Mauresmo at the start of 2016, when he will play in the Hopman Cup mixed team event in Perth and then the Australian Open.

Mauresmo will also work with Murray during the off-season.
