A memorable week for the Murray family will not end with Andy and Jamie both playing in finals on the concluding day of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. After Andy’s remarkable victory over Milos Raonic here in the first of Saturday’s singles semi-finals, brother Jamie and his Brazilian partner, Bruno Soares, were unable to match that performance in their doubles semi-final against Rajeev Ram and Raven Klaasen.

Murray and Soares had been in fine form earlier in the week, winning all three of their round-robin matches, but never got going against Ram and Klaasen, who won 6-1, 6-4. The American and the South African, who have been making their debuts in the event, took the opening set in just 21 minutes and soon took a hold in the second with an early break of Soares’ serve. Although Murray and Soares broke Ram to level at 3-3, their comeback was short-lived. Soares was broken again in the following game and Ram and Klaasen went on to serve out for victory after just 60 minutes.

In Sunday’s final Ram and Klaasen will take on Finland’s Henri Kontinen and Australia’s John Peers, who was Murray’s long-term partner until their split at the end of last year. Kontinen and Peers beat Bob and Mike Bryan 7-6, 6-4.

Despite their disappointment, Murray and Soares at least have the consolation of knowing that they will finish the year as the world’s No 1 doubles team. The Scot and the Brazilian were presented with a trophy to mark their achievement by Chris Kermode, the head of the Association of Tennis Professionals.
