Bogdanovic into last eight as rain holds up Murray

It will take Andy Murray a minimum of three days to complete his second-round match against American Sam Querrey at the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island. The 19-year-old, who is the top seed for the event, held a 5-3 lead over Querrey last night when play was called off for the day because of steady rain at the grass-court event.

The match was supposed to have been played on Wednesday but it did not get under way because of the wet conditions.

No top seed has ever won the event in its 30-year history, and the Scot almost tumbled out on Tuesday, when he had to save five match points in a 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 win over Brazilian Ricardo Mello. The victor of the Murray-Querrey match will face American wild card Robert Kendrick in the quarter-finals.

The second-round encounter between seventh-seeded American Mardy Fish and Brazilian Thiago Alves could not get started because of the poor weather. The winner will face Australian veteran Mark Philippoussis in the last eight.

Also in the bottom half of the draw, Britain's Alex Bogdanovic completed a 6-1, 7-6 victory over George Bastl of Switzerland, who upset second seed Ivo Karlovic on Tuesday. Bogdanovic, who held a 2-1 lead before play was called off on Wednesday, will face sixth seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the quarters.

In other matches that got under way on Wednesday, eighth-seeded American Justin Gimelstob defeated Australian Wayne Arthurs 6-3 7-6, and Kristian Pless of Denmark posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Chilean Paul Capdeville.
