Former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian has announced his retirement from tennis, citing a shoulder injury as the reason behind his decision.

The 31-year-old Argentine announced his arrival in 2002 when he reached the final at SW19, losing out to Lleyton Hewitt. Nalbandian was also a semi-finalist in the three other Grand Slams and climbed as high as third in the world in 2006 but a loss of form and fitness mean he has tumbled down the rankings to 231.

"It's a sad day but the shoulder is not responding well," he said.
