Family problems give Agassi new perspective

Andre Agassi has revealed that his mother, Elizabeth, and younger sister, Tammee, are battling breast cancer. "It has been a difficult year in many respects with my sister having breast cancer and my mom was diagnosed with it just a month ago," the American said. "It hasn't been easy, but in many ways it has gotten the family stronger and close.

"It has given me the perspective, that unfortunately sometimes only certain tragedies can bring, that I am trying to utilise in a positive way," Agassi added. "My concentration hasn't been the easiest, but I think it is getting better."

Agassi, the world No 1, defeated America's Alex Kim in the first round at the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
