Federer overcomes error-strewn display to see off Hanescu

Roger Federer made hard work of beating Victor Hanescu at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, on Sunday but eventually made it through to join Andy Murray in the third round.

Federer, who has won the title twice in the past, committed 39 unforced errors before emerging a 6-3 6-7 6-1 winner. Murray's final score of 6-4 6-4 against Andreas Seppi looked much more satisfactory, but that was not the case for the Scot, who admitted he would need to play much better to go any further in the tournament.

However, the men's field did suffer one major loss, as the fifth seed, Nikolay Davydenko, has withdrawn after being diagnosed with a fracture in his left wrist. He could be out of action for up to a month.
