Ferreira puts out Sampras

Wayne Ferreira qualified for the quarter–finals of the ATP Scottsdale event with a straight–sets 7–5 victory over Pete Sampras.

Ferreira defeated the American, who has not advanced beyond the second round in five visits to Scottsdale, by a 7–5 7–5 scoreline.

The California–based Ferreira said: "I like to play against guys that serve and volley big. I've played well this year and I've worked hard on my game."

Sampras added: "I can't seem to break through here and I've always struggled. I just can't seem to find my game here."

Spaniard Carlos Moya rallied from a set down to record his eighth consecutive win over best friend and countryman Fernando Vicente with a 2–6 6–2 6–2 win.

Moya takes a seven–match winning streak into his quarter–final match against German Rainer Schuettler, who beat another Spaniard, Felix Mantilla, 6–0 2–6 6–1.

Seventh seed Xavier Malisse, from Belgium, overcame Italian Andrea Gaudenzi to win 7–5 7–6 (7–6) and set up a last–eight clash with Ferreira.
