Tim Henman showed enough class to ease past the Spaniard Fernando Vicente 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the Tennis Masters Series in Toronto on Monday night.

Henman produced occasional flashes of his best form but was content to take his opportunities at the end of each set as Vicente generally held his serve comfortably and produced some impressive shots of his own. The British No 1 now faces either the American James Blake or the Canadian wild card Simon Larose in the next round.

Henman's victory maintained Britain's presence in the event after Greg Rusedski again fell to his nemesis, Todd Martin, who came from a set down to win 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.

It did not take long for Lleyton Hewitt to go from Wimbledon champion to first-round loser. Felix Mantilla condemned the Australian to a fast exit, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a match which was disrupted by a two-hour rain delay when Hewitt had been leading by a set and a break.
