Tim Henman is through to the second round after beating Fernando Gonzalez when the Chilean retired at the end of the first set in the Tennis Masters Series event in Montreal.
Gonzalez, seeded 14th, called it a day because of an injury to his right knee after losing the first set 6–2 in 36 minutes to the Briton who is buoyant after his tournament victory in Washington at the weekend.
Next up for Henman is former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian of Argentina.
