In the women's singles, top seed Kim Clijsters begins her quest for a first Grand Slam title against the American Amber Liu, while her fellow Belgian and second seed, Justine Henin-Hardenne, faces a qualifier.
Fourth seed Venus Williams is also up against a qualifier, while No 3 seed Lindsay Davenport has a tougher task against another Belgian, Els Callens.
