Philipp Kohlschreiber upsets number two seed Marin Cilic at Indian Wells

The German triumphed 6-4 6-4 over the Australian Open finalist - snapping a 13-game losing streak to top 10 players in the process

Philipp Kohlschreiber produced an upset at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells by toppling number two seed Marin Cilic.

The German triumphed 6-4 6-4 over the Australian Open finalist - snapping a 13-game losing streak to top 10 players in the process.

Kohlschreiber, 34, advances to the final 16 at Indian Wells for the first time since 2011.

There he will face Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who earned his spot after compatriot Gael Monfils retired injured in the second set of their third-round match.

Herbert, who progressed after leading 6-2 3-1, will be bidding to reach his second singles quarter-final of the season.

Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro also won through to the fourth round, beating David Ferrer 6-4 7-6 (7/3).

The Spaniard fought hard, saving the first 10 break points against his serve, but in the end Del Potro needed just one break to seal the match.

It is the first time Del Potro has reached the round of 16 at Indian Wells since he made the tournament final in 2013, where he eventually lost to Rafael Nadal.

His next match will feature compatriot Leonardo Mayer, who took just 75 minutes to overcome Japanese qualifier - and the man who beat Novak Djokovic in the second round - Taro Daniel 6-4 6-1.

Meanwhile, Canada's Milos Raonic, on the comeback after a 2017 marred by injuries, survived a tough match against Portugal's Joao Sousa, winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

Finishing with an impressive 12 aces, Raonic did not face a single break point in the deciding set.

His next opponent comes in the form of popular Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, who beat Israel's Dudi Sela 7-6 (7/5) 6-4.

American Sam Querrey dropped the first set against qualifier Yuki Bhambri, but rallied to win 6-7 (4/7) 6-4 6-4.

He will play Feliciano Lopez in the next round, after the Spaniard won 7-6 (8/6) 4-6 6-4 against number eight seed Jack Sock.
