Johanna Konta progressed to the third round of the Miami Open with a straight-sets win over Montenegro's Danka Kovinic.

The British number one, seeded 24th and thus given a bye through the first round, won 6-4, 6-2 on Court 1 in Key Biscayne.

Konta needed two breaks of serve to take the opening set and two more in the second took her into a dominant 5-1 lead.

Kovinic held serve and saved three match points at 2-5, even forcing a break point, but Konta held herself together and finally got over the line.

She will next face qualifier Elena Vesnina, who beat 10th seed Venus Williams in three sets on the Stadium court. Williams saved a match point during the second-set tie-break but Vesnina came through 6-0, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2.
