Nalbandian's fine mess

David Nalbandian was yesterday fined the maximum penalty of €10,000 (£8,000) after he was defaulted from Sunday's final of the Aegon Championships at Queen's Club against Marin Cilic. Police are investigating the incident in which a line judge's leg was cut by broken wood after Nalbandian kicked an advertising hoarding in frustration.

Nalbandian had already lost his prize money and ranking points and a spokeswoman for the Association of Tennis Professionals said the 30-year-old Argentinian had also been given the maximum on-site fine for "unsportsmanlike conduct". That might not be an end to the player's punishment by the ATP, which could still take action over the critical comments Nalbandian made in post-match interviews.

A Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed that police are investigating a complaint of alleged assault. "We are aware of an incident at the Aegon Championships on June 17," the spokesman said. "A complaint has been made and the Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating."

Nalbandian issued a statement which said he had made a personal apology to the line judge, Andrew McDougall. "I never intended to hit him," Nalbandian said

Melanie Oudin, of the United States, won her first main tour title when she beat Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 6-2 in the rain-delayed final of the Aegon Classic at Edgbaston.
