Paul Newman, The Independent's tennis correspondent, was honoured last night in the Association of Tennis Professionals' annual World Tour Awards. Newman won the Ron Bookman Media Excellence Award, given each year to a journalist "who has made significant contributions to the game of tennis".
He is the first winner from a British newspaper since 2006, with recent awards going to writers working in the US, Australia, Italy, France and Spain. The award was presented by Brad Drewett, the ATP's president.
