Nick Kyrgios shocks Novak Djokovic as Serbian's poor start to 2017 continues in Acapulco exit

The-12 time grand slam champion suffered a straight-sets defeat to exit the Abierto Mexicano Telcel at the quarter-final stage

Novak Djokovic crashed out of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco following a quarter-final defeat to Nick Kyrgios.

The sixth-seeded Australian served brilliantly against the Serbian, sending down 25 aces on his way to the 7-6 (11/9) 7-5 victory over the 12-time grand slam champion.

He saved two set points to win the first-set tie-break, while taking advantage of the only chance he had to break the Djokovic serve in the second set.

It was the first meeting between the pair and 21-year-old Kyrgios, renowned for a volatile temperament that has seen him disciplined by umpires and tournament officials in the past, has now beaten Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer the first time he has faced them.

Kyrgios will play America's Sam Querrey in the semi-finals after his 6-1 7-5 win over number four seed Dominic Thiem.

The American faltered when serving for the match at 5-3 and allowed the Austrian to rally and level the match, but Querrey broke straight back.

Nadal made it 13 career wins from 13 in Acapulco with a 7-6 (7/2) 6-3 win over qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka.

Nadal - who has won all 26 sets he has played at the tournament - raced into a 5-0 lead in the first-set tie-break and a forehand winner on the first set point wrapped it up.

Nishioka then broke Nadal early in the second set but Nadal responded to reel off four straight games and an overhead smash on match point wrapped up victory in one hour and 57 minutes.

Nadal will face Marin Cilic in the last four after Steve Johnson was forced to withdraw from their match with a sprained ankle.

Andy Murray moved into the Dubai Duty Free Championships semi-finals on Thursday after emerging triumphant from a remarkable last-eight match against Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, winning a pivotal 38-point tie-break.

World number one Murray saved seven match points in the epic 31-minute tie-break en route to a 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (20-18) 6-1 victory that took almost three hours in total.

The top-seeded Briton, back in tournament action this week for the first time since the Australian Open, will take on seventh seed Lucas Pouille on Friday for a place in the final.

Frenchman Pouille's quarter-final saw him overcome Roger Federer's conqueror, the Russian qualifier Evgeny Donskoy, 6-4 5-7 7-6 (7/2).

Fourth seed Gael Monfils was beaten 6-3 7-5 by Fernando Verdasco, who will take on Robin Haase in the last four.

At the Brasil Open in Sao Paolo, top seed Pablo Carreno Busta moved into the quarter-finals after a 6-4 6-2 win over local wildcard Joao Souza.

He will face Italy's Fabio Fognini, who saw off Alessandro Giannessi 7-6 (7/1) 7-6 (7/3).
