Short-lived Wimbledon dream for O'Donoghue
The Wimbledon dream was short–lived for British outsider Jane O'Donoghue today as she crashed out in the first round to the all–powerful Venus Williams.
The 19–year–old Wigan wildcard put up a typically British gutsy performance on a sun–drenched centre court and managed to steal two games, including one break, from the world No One.
But the teenager, who is ranked 344th in the world, was no match for the American champion, who stormed into the second round to win 6–1, 6–1.
However, O'Donoghue's lion–hearted performance will not have been lost on another British battler, world boxing champion Lennox Lewis, who watched the game with Williams's family.
Lewis, wearing a hat and sunglasses, looked to be enjoying himself on another hot day at Wimbledon.
O'Donoghue earns around £5,000 a year – a far cry from her opponent, who is rumoured to have earned more than £7 million.
