SPEAKING

"Whenever I play well, I'm really into the match. I have to vent some of that emotional energy, got to let it out, and the crowd finds it entertaining." - Andrew Ilie, who stripped off his shirt and tossed it into the crowd after winning his second career title.

"I played as well as I was allowed to play today." - Jason Stoltenberg, after losing to Ilie.

"That match was very difficult. What happened there, I don't want to put too much emphasis on. For me, it boils down to the fact that I really love to play tennis." - Monica Seles, talking about being jeered off the court when she lost 6-0, 6-0 to Martina Hingis at the Ericsson Open.

"Although this is a very tough scenario, the idea of Pete (Sampras) playing (doubles), which has been talked about - or even Andre (Agassi) playing in doubles - is certainly an exciting one." - US Davis Cup captain John McEnroe, discussing ideas for the doubles team that will play against Spain in July.

SIZZLING SUAREZ

Although she didn't win the title, Argentina's Paola Suarez was one of the best players in the rain-plagued Bausch and Lomb Championships. Suarez upset second-seeded Serena Williams of the United States early in the week, then knocked off Anna Kournikova of Russia in the quarter-finals. She finally lost to eventual champion Monica Seles in the semi-finals.

SUSPENDED

Chile and Argentina were kicked out of this year's Davis Cup in the wake of crowd trouble that disrupted their match in Santiago earlier this month. Because of the decision by the International Tennis Federation's board of directors, Morocco advances to the World Group by default. Trouble flared in Santiago on April 7 with Chile leading 1-0 and Argentina's Mariano Zabaleta ahead of Nicolas Massu two sets to one. Angered by line calls against their player, Chilean spectators tossed fruit, coins, bottles and plastic chairs onto the court, forcing the match to be halted. The next day, Argentina withdrew from the best-of-5 series, and Chile was declared the winner. Chile also has been banned from playing at home through 2002.

STEPPING UP

By winning her second title of the year, Monica Seles has moved up two spots on the WTA Tour rankings, from ninth to seventh, switching spots with Julie Halard-Decugis of France.

STRIPPER

When Andrew Ilie defeated fellow Australian Jason Stoltenberg 6-3, 7-5 to win the Galleryfurniture.com Tennis Challenge in Duluth, Georgia (United States), he ripped off his shirt and tossed it to the fans. It was Ilie's second career title, and the $49,500 winner's check was his biggest ever.

Mary Joe Fernandez and Tony Godsick, IMG vice president of Racquet Sports, were married on April 6 in Miami. The bridesmaids included Monica Seles. Last November, Fernandez practiced walking down the aisle as a bridesmaid for another WTA Tour player, fellow American Corina Morariu.
