US Open champion Serena Williams is to miss January's Australian Open because of education commitments.

The 18-year-old world number four will not be joining sister Venus at Melbourne despite being among the favourites for the title.

Despite winning four titles in 1999 she always insisted that education would take precedence over her tennis career and has criticised world number one Martina Hingis for not continuing her studies.
