Maurice Richards

For Wales v England March 1969

against England at Cardiff Arms Park in 1969 was amazing. He scored four tries and it still takes my breath away. I have total admiration for this man. Richards (below) dominated the game, standing tall on the wing. It inspired me to play; I was only five or six at the time but I remember watching it on Grandstand and being totally overawed. His balance, strength, power - very different to my idol Gerald Davies - but they both had that phenomenal determination to get over the line. These moments don't happen very often, in the national stadium in front of a partisan crowd; you couldn't get a ticket anywhere. The atmosphere was just terrific. We put too much emphasis on beating England, and it's always over-hyped, but it's another thing to actually do it. After this game my dad was talking about how we beat the English and pushed me to be like Richards. That performance was so impressive because I can't remember him playing that well in any other games, therefore it's ingrained in my memory. Ieuan Evans, now 40 and part of Team RBS, played on the wing 72 times for Wales from 1987-1998.
