ENGLAND'S new cricket captain, Michael Atherton, took the helm, but was unable to steer England to victory in the fifth Test against Australia at Edgbaston. Spectators, however, found something to enthuse about - spontaneous cheers from the crowd greeted the news that the enigmatic chairman of the England committee, Ted Dexter, had resigned.

The imminent arrival of the football season was heralded by the Charity Shield at Wembley. Roy Keane had a hard time living up to the expectations engendered by a pounds 3.75m close- season move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester United, but Mark Hughes was on form as he put the champions into the lead. Ian Wright equalised for Arsenal and the contest was decided in a penalty shoot- out where Wright failed to put his shot home. United took the trophy after Arsenal's goalkeeper, David Seaman, with a half- hearted attempt failed to beat his counterpart, Peter Schmeichel.
