THE number of extra race meetings in the Flat season, which starts today, compared with 1953. There are 592 fixtures this season, which lasts 32 weeks, and the 50 per cent increase from 1953 can be at least partly accounted for by the proliferation of evening meetings, for which betting shops will be open for the first time on 16 April.
