THE percentage increase in the average major league baseball salary this year, to dollars 1,076,089 ( pounds 727,087), the smallest increase since 1987. Average salaries rose by 20.8 per cent last year, 42.5 per cent in 1991, 20.2 per cent in 1990 and 13.3 per cent in 1988.
