The dual Olympic champion Mark Todd won a competitive advanced class (section 1) at the Land Rover British Horse Trials at Gatcombe Park yesterday, writes Mary Gordon Watson. Riding Lady Bamford's Vanbicharboniere, a much- improved horse, Todd was equal fourth after the dressage phase, incurred one time fault in the showjumping, and added just 16 time faults on the cross country, setting the fastest time. This clinched a narrow victory over the Suffolk-based Australian Brook Staples. The dressage leader, William Fox-Pitt, went fast and well on Tawny Owl to finish a close-up third.
