Oscar Urbina will ride Mons in Saturday's St Leger at Doncaster. Mons leapt to the forefront of the Leger betting last month after finishing a half- length second to Dushyantor in York's Great Voltigeur Stakes. He was ridden then by Frankie Dettori, who will be on Shantou in Saturday's pounds 225,000 contest.

Other jockeys seeking their first British Classic success will be David Harrison on Pricket, Kevin Darley on St Mawes and Kieren Fallon, whose mount Gordi has been the best backed runner over the weekend. The price of the Queen's Vase winner has been cut from 10-1 to 8-1 by Ladbrokes and William Hill. Fallon was booked by Dermot Weld yesterday after it emerged that French-based Olivier Peslier would be unavailable.

Fallon, who finished second on Sapience in the 1989 St Leger, said: "I'm delighted to get the mount which will be my first for Mr Weld. It's wide open this year and Gordi goes into the Leger both a fresh horse and guaranteed to get the trip."

St Leger betting: Ladbrokes: 7-2 Dushyantor, Mons, 5-1 Sharaf Kabeer (9-2), Lady Carla, 8-1 Heron Island, Gordi (10-1), St Mawes (10-1), 9- 1 Shantou (8-1), 14-1 Clerkenwell, Pricket, 16-1 Chief Contender, Flying Legend, 25-1 bar. (5-1 "with a run" Lady Carla).

William Hill: 7-2 Dushyantor, Mons, 11-2 Sharaf Kabeer (5-1), 8-1 Gordi (10-1), Heron Island, Shantou, 10-1 St Mawes (8-1), 14-1 Clerkenwell, Flying Legend (12-1), 20-1 bar.
